Explore Language and Culture: Intercambio Circles
Our Intercambio (Language Exchange) circles recently concluded in June 2024, offering a dynamic space for Spanish and English language exchange and cultural immersion. Participants engaged in mutual support, connecting with their neighbors, exchanging cultural insights, and building connections in a supportive environment.
As part of efforts to address the community and city shortage of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learning and the growing need for ESOL access, we created our version of an ESOL program – our intercambio. We have some neighbors who are fluent in English and are eager to learn Spanish, the predominant language in our network.
In our Intercambio, we believe that every community member has both something to learn and something to offer. Community members designed the curriculum, served as both students and teachers, and fostered an environment of mutual support and relationship building with neighbors of different lived experiences.
What We Offered
- Language Exchange: Conversations to practice Spanish and English, facilitated by mutual aid principles of reciprocity and solidarity as each community member brought their own language abundance and need.
- Cultural Understanding: Insights into diverse perspectives and cultural nuances, promoting understanding and celebrating diversity.
- Community Engagement: Building connections among neighbors from different backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Supportive Learning Environment: Encouraging and valuing everyone’s language journey and goals within a framework of mutual aid.
